About

About Me I'm an unschooling vegetarian green-anarchist feminist hippie radical creature who really likes food. I spend a lot of time in the kitchen, cooking up tasty food that I enjoy sharing with whoever else happens to be around. In the small part of time when I'm not cooking, out getting/shopping for/gathering/growing food, reading a cookbook, watching a cooking show, or talking about food, I like to focus on feminism, social justice, queer issues, radical sustainability, and unschooling. I also enjoy reading fantasy novels, wearing lots of purple, and traveling around Southeast Canada and Northeast US visiting cool people and doing cool things.

I live in the Montreal area of Quebec with my parents, sister, and two cats, where I'm lucky enough to have access to a ton of local organic produce.

About This Blog This is basically an outlet for my love of food, and as such I'll post everything from recipes and experiments, to conversations I have with people about food, new places I find to get food, new restaurants I eat at, gardening, and musings on radical sustainability and food justice.

Healthy Food I consider myself a mostly healthy eater, and I try to cook with a lot of local and organic foods, whole grains (plus I'm working on cutting down my grain consumption), and fresh (instead of canned or frozen) foods, but I'm not strict about any of these things. I also cook with virtually no tofu or other soy products, except for soy sauce, which I do use fairly frequently. I don't currently cook with any meat (and yes, I include chicken and fish as meat), though I'm no longer attached to always being vegetarian, so may start using some meat in my recipes at some point. I do NOT equate fat in food with being unhealthy, so if you're looking for low-fat cooking, this isn't the best place! Mostly, my personal idea of what's healthy for me is plenty of varied and fresh vegetables; legumes, nuts, and eggs, as protein; and small amounts of whole grains and less whole grains, and dairy products.

While I try to eat a pretty healthy diet, I never "sacrifice" taste for health. I make food I find really delicious, and I seek out food I find really delicious. It also happens to mostly be healthy, but sometimes it isn't so much. I make and eat food that makes me feel GOOD, and that good is a mix of physical and emotional. Food should make people feel good, and it's a problem with our culture (that both creates a ton of shame around food, and puts stuff in a lot of food that makes many people feel physically unhealthy) that so often it doesn't. Ultimately I'm a big fan of intuitive eating, and feel that what's healthy for each individual is what makes them feel healthy and good!

Tasty Food I love complex flavors, spicy/hot food, caramelized food, roasted food... I'm a huge fan of veggies and bread, I like noodles and beans, and if I'm eating out I'll likely pick an Indian or Mexican restaurant. I don't have a huge sweet tooth, and mostly only enjoy really high quality cakes, pies, whipped cream or custard desserts, or of course, dark chocolate. Most of what I cook or bake is savory.

Ethics I recognize the incredible privilege I have in having access to all the great and healthy foods I do, and I believe fresh, organic, healthy, and tasty food is something everyone has a right to, while also recognizing most people currently don't. I try and be aware of that privilege, and basically I just try not to be an ass. (I also hope to, in the near-ish future, be involved in communities of people trying to make good food a lot more accessible)
